As an individual teacher or an astrological school, it is helpful to consider not only…

by Sam Reynolds, president of the International Coalition of Astrology Educators As an astrological educator,…
We are an international group of educators and practitioners dedicated to quality education in astrology. We have created a credentialing body to facilitate cooperation, high standards, and professional and academic advancement in our field. We are not a school, but rather a standards organisation, meaning we do not grant degrees. Our goal is to encourage consistency and quality in education and practice, to invite not compel, to encourage, not criticize, and to foster professional practice across the discipline.

Schools benefit from Core Competencies in several ways. Firstly, they are able to vet new students much more accurately, in that any competencies they bring with them are clearly understood, meaning no surprise learning gaps for either the student or the institution. Secondly, because there is no obligation to offer the full competency programme, any size school, even a single instructor, can affiliate for those Core Competencies that fit what is already being taught.
Individual astrology students and practitioners benefit from Core Competencies because we measure outcomes, not inputs. If you went to school or were self-taught, the Core Competencies are the same. Also, when you are looking to upskill, affiliated schools will list the Core Competencies associated with their various course offerings, making your selection much easier.
Clients benefit from Core Competencies, because they can quickly evaluate which areas of the discipline a given practitioner has mastered. Astrology is so vast, that no one astrologer would want to master all competencies. If a client is looking for advice on a relationship for instance, it will be easy to find a practitioner displaying that competency, or choose a different practitioner if the query is about the stock market and so on.
